The Tennessee Kappa Alumni & Volunteer Corp. announced Monday that it has acquired the two pieces of property that have been home to the UT Martin SigEp chapter since shortly after its founding.
Dr. Stephen Shanklin (Murray State, 1970) purchased the property located at 610 Lee Street in Martin for the then-new Tennessee Kappa chapter to use as its Chapter House. The location to the east of the residence halls was an ideal spot to help build the chapter.
Less than two years later, Dr. Shanklin acquired the adjacent property at 108 Jeffress Dr. for use as Scholars House, allowing the chapter to expand its residences and have more space for meetings and events.
Dr. Shanklin held the property in trust for the undergraduate chapter. In 2009, significant repairs were made to the roof and interior of both houses. The acquisition is the culmination of retiring the remaining debt associated with both properties.
“Brother Shanklin’s generosity and abundant patience over the years has been an amazing gift to our chapter,” said Stephen Yeargin, AVC President. “Our AVC is proud to now own both of our houses outright thanks to the tremendous generosity of our alumni, and we are very excited for the future.”
The Chapter House was built in 1932 and had served as educator and student housing in the years prior to its acquisition by Dr. Shanklin. Scholars House was built in 1957.
